If you’re new to vaping, then you’ll need to know what you should – and shouldn’t – look for when buying a vape pen. There are so many choices out there that you could go crazy, so we figured we’d give you some tips before you decide because one size doesn’t necessarily fit all.

First off, you might be wondering just how vape pens work in the first place. The simplest answer is this: the vape pen holds a pod/tank/cartridge that contains the liquid of your choice as well as cotton wicks that absorb that liquid. When the vape pen is turned on, the coils heat up, the liquid evaporates, and you just breathe that vapor in. It’s that simple.

Or is it? Each vape pen is outfitted differently, comes with different coils, and can hold different sizes of pods. So the first thing you should consider when purchasing a vape pen is the capacity it can deal with. A word to the wise? All the vape pens at Ignite offer the largest pods on the market – so you won’t run out as often.

Some vape pens are activated by a small button while others activate automatically when you inhale.

Session Vapes

So how will you be using your vape? If it’s something you do when you’re out with friends, then you’ll need a session vape – so named because they only heat material for a small amount of time when turned on. They can be handed around your squad easily and quickly and withstand the frequent pulls in a short amount of time.

On Demand Vapes

These vapes are best if you’re looking just to take the occasional small hit now and then. These vapes conserve more materials and work much more efficiently. They’re best for vaping alone.

Convection vs. Conduction Vapes

Hands up: who thought we’d get through this without science rearing its head? Gotcha! Science matters: Convection vapes heat the air, then filter it through a chamber to vaporize the oil and because of this, it makes them better at bringing you an even pull. Convection vapes are also known for tastier and higher quality vapor.

So what’s the downside? Well, unless convection vapes are cleaned often, the contents of the vape melt all over the chamber spoiling the taste and, in some cases, clogging it completely.

Conduction vapes, on the other hand, use a heating element that is required to touch the oil itself before it can vape it. This is more user-friendly as you are given instant control over the temperature and usually costs less. Conduction was once the way to go but now that convection vapes are improving, the numbers are changing.

Vapes Are Healthier!

Smoking is inherently dangerous as you’re filling your lungs with carcinogens – but vaping doesn’t do that. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain around 7,000 chemicals, most of which are poisonous. According to Dr. Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., Clinical Research Director at the Johns Hopkins, vape pens have fewer.

Nicotine Form

If you prefer nicotine in your vape, you can choose a vape pen/pod with different forms, depending on what you’re looking for. For example, our Smok Nord are made for nicotine salts, rather than freebase nicotine found in most e-liquids. The salts make the e-liquid easier to inhale and deliver a hit that is less harsh on the throat.

Battery Life

Vape pens/e-cigs run on rechargeable lithium ion batteries. The size of the battery (and, of course, how often you use it) will determine how long the pen will last without having to be plugged in for a recharge. If you’re a major vaper, then we suggest you keep a spare battery with you.
